How to Start an Online Income With No Money: A Realistic Guide for Beginners

Make Money Online · Beginner’s Guide

Affiliate disclosure: This guide recommends CB Profit Club, a free affiliate program, and contains affiliate links to it. If you join and later buy an upgrade, EvonSoft may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Results vary, and many people earn little or nothing. Please read our earnings disclaimer.

Short answer: you can start an online income with $0, no website, no camera and no special skills, but not with no time. The realistic route for most beginners is to sell something that already exists (as an affiliate) instead of building a product or a client list first. The setup work that stops most people (a landing page, follow-up emails, a tracking link) can be handled for you for free. What’s left is the part nobody can do for you: bringing visitors, a few hours a week, for months. Nobody can promise you a result, and anyone who does is the first red flag.

If you’ve searched “side hustle”, “passive income” or “make money online”, you’ve seen the same promises: $10,000 a month, a few clicks a day, a secret system. You’ve probably also noticed that most of those pages want to sell you a course before they tell you anything useful.

This guide is the opposite. It compares the five realistic ways to start, says plainly what each one costs in money and time, and then speaks to your situation, whether you’re retired, working a 9-to-5, at home with kids, curious about AI or simply burned by a scam before. I’ve worked as an affiliate for about six years on ClickBank, JVZoo, WarriorPlus and Digistore24, and the honest version is less exciting than the ads, but it’s also more likely to work.

5 ways to start an online income, compared

Almost every legitimate way to earn online fits one of five models. Here’s how they compare for someone starting from zero:

Model Money to start What you need The catch
Freelancing (Upwork, Fiverr) $0 A skill clients pay for: writing, design, admin, editing You trade hours for money, and platforms take a cut: Fiverr keeps 20% of every order, Upwork 0% to 15%
Selling digital products (Etsy, your own site) Low A product people want: printables, templates, guides On Etsy you pay $0.20 per listing, a 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing, and you need to create the product first
YouTube or content creation $0 Time, consistency and comfort on camera or with your voice Ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months (or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days)
AI-powered services $0 to $20 a month An AI tool and clients who’ll pay for the result The AI does the work, but finding clients is still on you, and competition is growing fast
Affiliate marketing $0 Visitors you can send to an offer No product or clients to find, but you only earn when someone you refer buys, and traffic takes time

Fees and thresholds are taken from Upwork’s own comparison, Etsy’s published seller fees and YouTube’s Partner Program rules, checked in October 2026.

None of these is a get-rich-quick scheme, and all five can work. The question is which one asks for things you already have.

Why affiliate marketing suits most beginners

As an affiliate, you recommend another company’s product with a personal link. When someone buys through it, you earn a commission. The company handles the product, the payment, the delivery and the customer support.

That removes the three things that stop most beginners in the other models: you don’t need a skill to sell (freelancing), a product to create (digital products) or a huge audience before you earn anything (YouTube). One sale can count from day one.

What it doesn’t remove is traffic. Someone has to see your link. In the largest survey of affiliates, by Authority Hacker, 45.3% said getting traffic was their biggest challenge. I go deeper into the numbers in how much you can make with affiliate marketing, including why most beginners earn little in their first months.

If you want to use AI or ChatGPT to make money

AI is a genuinely useful tool for an online income, but it’s a tool, not a business. “AI side hustle” videos tend to skip that. ChatGPT can draft a blog post, a video script or an email in a minute. It can’t decide what to sell, find people who want it or build trust with them.

The most practical way to use AI as a beginner is to speed up the content that brings visitors: articles, short-video scripts, Pinterest descriptions and answers to questions in your niche. Pair that with an offer that’s already set up and you’ve turned AI’s speed into something that can earn. CB Profit Club’s training includes a module on using AI for exactly this, and my list of tools for affiliate marketing covers the AI tools worth using, including free ones.

One warning: anything sold as “AI makes money for you while you sleep” is selling you the course, not the income.

If you want a real online business, not a gig

A gig pays once; a business keeps paying because it owns something: a list of customers, a library of content, a stream of visitors. Gig work like freelancing or delivery stops paying the day you stop working. That’s the difference most people are really after when they search for an online business.

Affiliate marketing becomes a business when you own two things. The first is a source of traffic, such as a blog, a YouTube channel or a Pinterest account that keeps sending visitors without you posting every day. The second is an email list, so a visitor who doesn’t buy today can still hear from you next week. Both take months to build, and both are assets you keep.

The fastest way to start that business is to borrow the parts you don’t own yet. A done-for-you funnel gives you a page that collects emails and a follow-up sequence that sells for you, while you focus on traffic. Once it’s working, you can build your own.

If you’re retired and want extra income

Retirees often have the one thing younger beginners don’t: time to be consistent. What you may not want is a boss, a schedule, physical work or a big upfront risk with savings you’ve spent decades building.

That makes a $0-to-start model sensible, and I’d steer you away from anything that asks for thousands of dollars upfront, “investment” programs, or opportunities that pay you mainly for recruiting other people. Those are the classic warning signs of business-opportunity scams.

Affiliate marketing can fit a retirement well: you can work at your own pace, from any computer, and write about things you already know from your career or hobbies. Your life experience is real content. A retired teacher, nurse or engineer has advice that a 22-year-old with a YouTube channel doesn’t.

Start with the free tools, take the training slowly and never put money in that you can’t afford to lose. If a tech step gets confusing, CB Profit Club’s setup videos walk through each one, and it includes live coaching sessions where you can ask.

If you work full time and only have evenings

You don’t need to quit your job, and I’d advise against it until a side income has been steady for months. What you need is a setup that doesn’t demand your attention at fixed times, like client calls or live streams.

Affiliate marketing works asynchronously. You create something once, in an evening or on a weekend, and it can keep working while you’re at your job. A blog post can bring visitors for years, and an email sequence follows up with each visitor on its own schedule. That’s the real meaning of “money while you sleep”: the selling can be automated, but the work to set it up isn’t.

A realistic plan is five to ten hours a week: one or two pieces of content, plus a little time learning. Skip anything that needs a daily commitment you can’t keep. The done-for-you parts of a funnel matter more for you than for anyone, because setup work is exactly what eats the few hours you have.

If you’ve been burned before: is any of this legit?

Being sceptical is the right instinct. A lot of what’s sold under “make money online” is a scam or close to one: courses that teach you to sell the same course, programs that pay for recruiting, and “systems” with a $37 front end followed by $2,000 of upsells.

Affiliate marketing itself is legitimate: Amazon, Shopify and most software companies run affiliate programs. What’s often not legitimate is the way it’s sold. Here’s how to judge any offer, including the one I recommend:

  • Can you start free, without a card? CB Profit Club’s Team tier is free and asks for no card.
  • Does it promise a specific income? It shouldn’t. I show real leaderboard data below, including how little most members earn.
  • Is the company traceable? Payments run through ClickBank, which has been in business since 1998 and holds an A+ BBB rating. Details in my ClickBank review.
  • Can you get a refund on paid parts? Paid upgrades carry a 14-day guarantee.

If you have no money to start

You can start for genuinely $0. Every tool a beginner needs has a free plan, so you don’t need to spend anything until you’ve earned something:

You need Free option
Something to promote A free affiliate program (ClickBank costs nothing to join as an affiliate)
A page that collects emails A done-for-you funnel on CB Profit Club’s free tier, or Systeme.io’s free plan
Follow-up emails A free autoresponder plan, plus prewritten emails you import
Visitors Free platforms: Pinterest, YouTube, a free blog, or answering questions in forums

The real cost is time, and some free plans have limits you’ll grow out of. A typical first paid setup is about $33 a month, and I compare the options in my guide to tools for affiliate marketing. But nobody should need a credit card to find out if this suits them.

One rule if money is tight: don’t buy traffic until you’ve made sales from free traffic. Paid ads are the fastest way for beginners to lose money.

If you have no skills or experience

Every affiliate started with no experience, me included. The skills involved are learnable, and none needs a degree: choosing what to promote, writing simply, and putting your content where people already look.

What beginners struggle with isn’t skill but the order of steps. They spend weeks building a website before choosing a product, or write content no one searches for. Follow a sequence and the skills come with practice:

  1. Pick one offer.
  2. Set up a way to capture emails.
  3. Pick one traffic channel.
  4. Publish consistently.
  5. Check what’s working once a month.

My guide to affiliate marketing for beginners lays out the first 90 days week by week. A free program with training and a ready-made funnel shortens the first two steps to an afternoon, so you can spend your learning time on the part that matters.

If you’re a stay-at-home parent

Your time comes in pieces: nap times, school hours, late evenings. Anything with fixed hours, client calls or quick replies will fight your schedule. You need work you can pick up and put down.

Affiliate content fits around a family because nothing is live. You can write a blog post across three nap times, schedule Pinterest pins for the week on a Sunday, or record a short video when the house is quiet. The email follow-up runs on its own whether you’re at the park or at the computer.

You also have a niche many people search for: parenting itself. Advice about routines, baby gear, organising the house or cooking for picky eaters is the kind of experience-based content readers trust. Promote products that fit your topic, or a training program for other parents who want to start too.

Be realistic about time: a few consistent hours a week beats a big burst followed by nothing.

If you don’t want to show your face or sell to people

You don’t need to be on camera, build a personal brand or message strangers. Plenty of affiliates are faceless, and the model suits introverts better than most: no cold calls, no client meetings, no live selling.

Faceless options that work:

  • Blogging: written articles that answer questions people search for.
  • Pinterest: image pins that link to your content or funnel.
  • Faceless video: screen recordings, slides or AI voiceovers.
  • Email: the most personal channel, and still completely private.

The selling is done by the page and the emails, not by you in a conversation. With a done-for-you funnel, the persuasive copy is already written, so your job is quiet work: creating helpful content and placing your link where it’s useful.

Start faceless, let the funnel sell →

If you want something set up for you

Be careful here, because “done for you” is where the biggest overpromises live. Nothing can do the whole business for you. Anyone selling a fully automatic income stream is selling the dream, usually for a high price.

What can honestly be done for you is the technical setup: the landing page, the follow-up emails, the tracking and the product itself. That’s real, and it’s the part that stops most beginners for weeks. What can’t be done for you is traffic, unless you pay for it.

CB Profit Club’s free tier is the cleanest example I know of the honest version:

  • A funnel tagged with your ClickBank ID.
  • A prewritten email campaign that imports into your autoresponder.
  • Training on how to bring visitors.

Setup takes about ten minutes once your ClickBank and autoresponder accounts exist, by the program’s own estimate. There’s an optional paid setup service, but you don’t need it.

Funnel, emails and tracking set up for you

The free starting point: what you get

CB Profit Club is a ClickBank affiliate program run by John Thornhill, a long-time affiliate marketer and ClickBank vendor. Its free Team tier is the starting point I recommend across this guide, for one reason: it removes the setup work without asking for money first.

Free Team tier What it means
Done-for-you funnel A ready-made page and offer, tagged with your ClickBank affiliate ID
Prewritten email campaign Imports into your own autoresponder (AWeber, or any other through Zapier), so the leads are yours
Training and live coaching Including traffic methods and a module on using AI
Commission 50% on upgrades bought by people you refer
Cost $0, no card required. Paid upgrades are optional and carry a 14-day guarantee
CB Profit Club free member dashboard with three setup steps
The first screen after joining for free: three setup steps.

One thing catches out many free members: leads are added to your own autoresponder, and the follow-up emails run from there. Connect one during setup, or your leads won’t hear from you.

CB Profit Club funnel setup page connecting an autoresponder
The funnel setup page inside the members area.

The catch, plainly: the free tier exists so that some members eventually upgrade, and you’ll see paid offers inside. You don’t have to buy any of them. And the funnel only works if you send visitors to it. My full CB Profit Club review covers the paid tiers and who should skip it.

What to realistically expect

Here’s the part most pages leave out. CB Profit Club shows a live leaderboard of members’ tracked sales, and in October 2026 it showed the real spread:

Gross sales #1 member #10 member
Last 30 days $3,631.15 $816.28
All time $76,721.02 $4,096.78

The 100th member, all time, was at $393.24. Across all members, total tracked sales came to about $23 per member on average. Most members earn little or nothing, mainly because most never build a source of visitors.

The CB Profit Club leaderboard, member names hidden. These are gross sales, not take-home pay, and they are not typical results.

Plan on months, not weeks. With free traffic, three to six months to a first commission is normal. Treat the first year as learning, and judge the results after that.

Your first week, step by step

  1. Day 1: Choose one situation from this guide and one traffic channel that suits it, such as a blog, Pinterest or faceless video.
  2. Day 2: Create a free ClickBank account and a free autoresponder account.
  3. Day 3: Join a free program with a ready funnel, connect your autoresponder and import the emails.
  4. Day 4: Test your own funnel. Sign up with a second email address and check that the first email arrives.
  5. Days 5 to 7: Publish your first two pieces of helpful content on your chosen channel, with your link where it fits naturally.

Then repeat step 5 every week. Consistency on one channel beats dabbling on five.

How to spot a make-money-online scam

Walk away if you see any of these:

  • A specific income promise, especially with a timeframe (“$500 a day in 30 days”).
  • Countdown timers, “only 3 spots left” or pressure to buy today.
  • You earn mainly by recruiting people who also pay to join.
  • No clear company name, address or refund policy.
  • A cheap front-end offer that leads to thousands in upsells before you’ve earned anything.
  • Screenshots of earnings with no way to verify them.
  • Anyone asking for your bank login, an upfront “activation fee” or payment in gift cards or crypto.

FAQ

Can I really start an online income with no money?

Yes. Affiliate programs like ClickBank are free to join, and free plans exist for funnels, autoresponders and traffic platforms like Pinterest and YouTube. What you can’t skip is time: expect to spend a few hours a week for several months before earning.

What’s the easiest way to make money online for beginners?

For most beginners, affiliate marketing has the fewest barriers: no product to create, no clients to find and nothing to pay to start. It isn’t easy in the sense of quick, because you still need to bring visitors, but a done-for-you funnel removes most of the technical work.

How much can a beginner make online?

Most beginners earn little or nothing in their first months. On CB Profit Club’s leaderboard, the top member’s sales were $3,631.15 in 30 days, while the average across all members was about $23 in total. Results depend on the traffic you build, and nobody can promise a figure.

Is this a job or a business?

It’s a business, not a job. Nobody employs you or pays you a wage. You earn commissions only when people you refer buy something, and you’re responsible for your own results and taxes.

Can retirees or stay-at-home parents do this?

Yes. Affiliate marketing doesn’t need fixed hours, so it fits around retirement or family life. Start free, avoid anything that asks for a large upfront payment, and work in short, consistent sessions.

Do I need to show my face or have followers?

No. Blogging, Pinterest, faceless video and email all work without showing your face, and you can start with zero followers. A funnel with an email list lets you build an audience as you go.

Is CB Profit Club free?

Yes, its Team tier is free with no card required, and it includes a done-for-you funnel, a prewritten email campaign and training. Paid upgrades are optional and have a 14-day guarantee. See my full review for the paid tiers.

Can AI make money for me automatically?

No. AI tools like ChatGPT can speed up writing content, scripts and emails, but they can’t find buyers or build trust for you. Use AI to create the content that brings visitors faster, and be wary of anyone selling a fully automatic AI income.
